Bombs over Baghdad: Who cares?
When, in April 1937, the German Condor Legion dropped 45,000 kilograms of explosives on the Spanish town of Guernica, international outrage followed, and Pablo Picasso was inspired to paint his now famous Guernica. When the US Air Force recently loosed 45,000 kilograms of bombs on a small Sunni farming district in Iraq, there was hardly a peep. These days, only “insurgent” suicide bombings warrant media attention, while the US’s air “surge” is politely played down.
…art doesn’t have to mean anything to be good… and sometimes it’s better when it doesn’t, but I feel like there is a greater issue at hand given that much of the nowish art I see seems to aspire to not just “no meaning” but to being meaning-proof, which is foreboding, to put it mildly.

Again, there is the illusion of “increased command over Nature,” meaning that cotton is cheap and that ten miles of country road on a bicycle have replaced four on foot. But even if man’s increased command over Nature included any increased command over himself (the only sort of command relevant to his evolution into a higher being), the fact remains that it is only by running away from the increased command over Nature to country places where Nature is still in primitive command over Man that he can recover from the effects of the smoke, the stench, the foul air, the overcrowding, the racket, the ugliness, the dirt which the cheap cotton costs us.

IMHO, of course. I know it might seem suspicious that I’ve ranked the rarest of the pile as the best— but trust me, it’s the track lengths on “Versions” that nail it for me, not the preciousness. Not that I haven’t played Quadrange twice as many times—- that’s the superior edition if you primarily listen to music while you read (easily) but if you throw in traveling, going towards, doing chores, etc., I think “Versions” is very possibly Ae’s best album ever. (This is coming from a guy who got on the train at ENVANE and initially hated CONFIELD, in case that’s pertinent.)
